BEMP's supporters have made 20 years of science, education, and stewardship possible

2019 Funders

  • Albert J. and Mary Jane Black Institute for Environmental Studies at Bosque School: (2001- Present) Provided essential start-up funding for BEMP and serves as the organizational home for BEMP within Bosque School.
  • Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority: (2010 – 2019) Provides support for BEMP’s administration and operations.
  • City of Albuquerque Open Space: (1996 – Present) supports BEMP After School Science (BASS) that gives opportunities for K-12 students, particularly in identified Title 1 Albuquerque Public Schools, to participate in hands-on citizen science in their bosque, schoolyards, and neighborhood parks.
  • Bernalillo County Open Space: (2007-Present) Supports monitoring and maintaining BEMP sites within Bernalillo County, busing students to and from sites, providing technical equipment, teacher training, quality control, office, and lab materials, printing, and staff time.
  • Bosque School: (1996 – Present) Has hosted and embraced BEMP since its inception. Bosque School provides office and classroom space, umbrella fiduciary management of BEMP, and in-kind support.
  • Cebrin Goodman Youth, Leadership, and the Environment Project: (2007-Present) Supports youth leadership conferences and actions geared towards enriching and developing the skills and capacity of tomorrow’s leaders in a green society.
  • Crawford McKee Foundation: (2003 to present) Supports general BEMP operations with particular emphasis on student research. Funding provided in memory of BEMP co-founder Dr. Cliff Crawford, and his dedication to regional watershed research by students of all ages.
  • Greater Rio Grande Watershed Alliance: (2014 – present) Supports particular research topics related to forest and watershed health including fire risk and restoration, tamarisk leaf beetle distribution and impacts, and phreatophyte control.
  • John and Eunice Davidson Fund: (2014 – Present) Supports environmental education, particularly for under-served students in the Doña Ana County area, and at La Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park.
  • Long Term Ecological Research (LTER): Sevilleta/ National Science Foundation: (1996 – Present) Support for BEMP’s participation in LTER, funding for educator staff time such that BEMP can be part of the LTER Schoolyard Habitat Program which targets under-served audiences.
  • McCune Charitable Foundation: (2013 – 2020 ) Funding to engage young students from underrepresented backgrounds in science, technology, education, art, and math (STEAM) to better increase their potential to study STEAM in college and move towards careers in those fields.
  • Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District: (2005 – Present) Support for vegetation studies and overall quality assurance of collected data. Periodic support for water quality research and monitoring and licensing of BEMP sites on MRGCD-managed and owned properties.
  • Middle Rio Grande Stormwater Quality Team: (2010 – Present) Funding to support water quality research and classroom curriculum in regards to stormwater discharge into the Rio Grande, general river health, and safety issues.
  • New Mexico State Parks Division: (2013 – Present) Supports BEMP education and fieldwork in southern New Mexico, particularly in La Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park and its BEMP site there. Also supports BEMP through the Kids ‘n Parks grant program.
  • New Mexico State Land Office: (2013 – present) Provided funding for the establishment, monitoring, and continued licensing of the State Land BEMP site near Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge in Albuquerque’s South Valley.
  • The University of New Mexico, Department of Biology: (1996 – Present) Has hosted and embraced BEMP since its inception. Provides office, lab, and classroom space, and has acted as the umbrella fiduciary management of BEMP, including offering in-kind support.
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District: (2004 – Present) Financial support to conduct BEMP’s technical and operational activities including data management and the production and distribution of technical reports.
  • U.S. Bureau of Reclamation: (2003 – Present) Funds annual BEMP field site vegetation data collection, botanist work and follow-up report, as well as BEMP staff support.
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: (2015 – 2017) Funding support for both general environmental education work and water quality studies to serve underrepresented students in science, particularly at BEMP’s northern Pueblo sites, Albuquerque’s South Valley sites, and the Doña Ana County field site.
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Valle de Oro: (2016 – Present) Funds BEMP’s environmental education programs, with special emphasis on those related to phenology. Financial support from Valle de Oro NWR allows BEMP to fund the Rio Grande Phenology Trail Coordinator position. These funds also provide transportation support and funds for a physical BEMP/US FWS bus so BEMP students can travel to and from field sites. See picture below!
  • Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District: (2013 – Present) Supports monitoring and ongoing research, with an emphasis on phreatophyte control and ecosystem response to land management treatments. Education support for local school children in Valencia County to travel to BEMP field sites.

Past Funders

  • Albuquerque Community Foundation: (2001-2017) Funding has allowed BEMP to transport thousands of area students, mostly from Albuquerque Public Schools, to and from field research at BEMP sites along the Rio Grande.
  • ConocoPhillips: (2012-2013) Funding supported site maintenance and monthly monitoring of BEMP sites. Study Trips with school not associated with monthly monitoring were also made possible through ConocoPhillips funding.
  • Educational Foundation of America: (2004-2009) Supported teacher salaries related to BEMP in order to provide innovative and excellent environmental education for ~3,500 students and teachers each year.
  • Good Samaritan Foundation: (2002-2004) Provided support for staff time for environmental education.
  • Intel Corporation: (2014-2015) Funding and in-kind staff time from Intel employees to design ecological monitoring through technology education to high school BEMP students.
  • LANL Foundation: (2012-2013) LANL (Los Alamos National Labs) Foundation supported BEMP education that served students of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo.
  • Messengers of the Healing Winds Foundation: (2003-2008) Supported operational expenses related to fire risk research, and effectiveness of post fire restoration efforts at BEMP sites. The foundation also built the initial Endowment for Environmental Studies at Bosque School to support future BEMP coordinator/teacher salaries.
  • The Nature Conservancy: (2013-2014) Supported watershed health education for BEMP students particularly dealing with water quality and the Rio Grande Water Fund.
  • New Mexico Association of Conservation Districts: (2004-2008) Supported BEMP monitoring related to phreatophyte control and other land management practices in Middle Rio Grande Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
  • PNM Resources Foundation: (2002 – 2009) Provided support to BEMP for much of the annual costs associated with transportation, technology, and information sharing as well as training seminars for teachers involved with BEMP and its sibling program New Mexico Watershed Watch.
  • PNM Resources Foundation; Various Classroom Innovation Grants: (2004-2007) Funding for various classroom innovation grants that expanded BEMP opportunities for Bosque School BEMP teachers Daniel Shaw, Kim Lester, Jessie Larson, and Carter Walker. The cross curricular projects supported BEMP learning in Spanish, science, and art classrooms and permitted participation by several bilingual Albuquerque Public School groups. Projects included: Small Mammal Initiative, Plantas del Bosque, and Reptiles y Anfibios Del Bosque.
  • Sandoval County: (2007-2008) Helped fund new BEMP site initiatives, field and classroom education, and Sandoval County field-trip transportation costs.
  • Seven Bar Foundation: (2001-2009) Funding for staff time and the administration of the Black Institute. Helped establish some of BEMP’s major research initiatives.
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: (2005-2008) Funding for groundwater and surface water quality studies.
  • U.S. Bureau of Land Management: (2012-2013) Supported students who monitored the bosque in Socorro County.
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: (2014-2016) Funding to coordinate communication of environmental enhancement activities as part of a Middle Rio Grande Urban Waters initiative.
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: (2001-2010) Middle Rio Grande Bosque Initiative - Support for education, outreach, and science. (2005-2008) Funding for groundwater and surface water quality studies.
  • U.S. Forest Service: (2008-2011) Funded restoration monitoring at several BEMP sites in cooperation with the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District under a Collaborative Forest Restoration Program grant.
