Love Your Mother Earth and Her Climate

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Bosque School hosted “Love Your Mother Earth and Her Climate” last week, which allowed students to learn new aspects of the environment by attending guest lectures from visiting speakers. The afternoon was part of an ongoing process to build knowledge and capacity for agency, adding to existing student work and inquiry.

The conference began with a keynote address from Subhankar Banerjee, Professor of Art and Ecology, as well as Lannan Foundation Endowed Chair of Land Arts of the American West. Students then attended three consecutive breakout sessions, which were recorded in a specially made Climate Conference Passport, and finished with closing remarks in the gym.

Breakout sessions were organized along the following threads:
1) Science: basic climate reality science, current knowledge, modeling, interpreting data
2) Expression: art, language, music inspired by climate reality
3) Action: concrete steps people can take to respond to climate reality and support people already impacted

Other guest speakers included Aaron Silverblatt-Buser, Class of 2006, who owns Silver Leaf Farms in Corrales with his brother Elan, Class of ’08; Madeleine Carey, Class of 2010, who currently works with WildEarth Guardians; Gary Goodman, founder and CEO of Goodman Realty Group and developer of Winrock Town Center; and Catherine Page Harris, Professor at UNM teaching Art & Ecology and Landscape Architecture.
