Education

BEMP students gain scientific literacy through participation in real world science.

“BEMP gave me the opportunity to translate my love for the place I live into useful action generating knowledge about it. As a younger student, I learned methods of ecological inquiry; as a college intern, I had the opportunity to design my own research projects and ask my own questions. I am so grateful to BEMP for being the catalyst of my scientific career.” Rowan Converse, former BEMP student participant, college intern, and now wildlife biologist.

There are two AMAZING ways
your students can be part of BEMP:

1. Classroom Education Activities

Have a BEMP educator visit your classroom, after-school club, or community group to learn more about the botany, entomology, social history, hydrology and/or wildlife of the Middle Rio Grande valley. For more information on classroom presentations and field trips offered, click below.

2. Bosque Study Trip

Schedule a Study Trip to give students field experience in our very own bosque (riparian forest). All Study Trips have a seasonal ecology focus and participants will collect data for a long term phenology (seasonal change) study that contributes to a national scientific database through Nature’s Notebook. Study Trips have a participant limit of 30 students.
BEMP has limited funding for transportation – please let us know if you require financial assistance for buses when scheduling.

When you come for a Study Trip, everyone will need:

  • close-toed footwear
  • seasonally appropriate layers
  • a full water bottle
  • pack-lunch
  • sunscreen & hat OR rain coat

Scheduling for the 2016-2017 school year opens Friday, August 8th, 2016.
